Karena Evans is a young 24 year old Canadian Director and Actress who presents a unique style of film. Working on videos such as 'Gods plan' 'Nice for what' 'In my feelings' by Drake alongside 'Everyday Life' by Coldplay and 'Garden' by SZA, all videos use colour, lighting and story telling to convey a sense of empowerment and a feel good tone. In Drakes videos for example, the lighting, colour and costume used create an 80s inspired American retro vibe, as show through the use of neon and reference to old American culture. In other videos, a sense of realism is created, such as in 'Garden' while some contrast with the realism of being set in an average American neighbourhood such as 'In my feelings' and 'Gods plan'.
The director values kindness, equality and positivity which is portrayed through their videos. In 'Gods plan' Drake donates money to a local neighbourhood to help those in needs. It presents him as charitable and socially aware, but also tells us that the director values helping those in need. In Drakes 'Nice for what' Evans defies conventions of traditional Hip-Hop videos by presenting women as powerful and respectable instead of sexual objects, focusing the shots onto their beauty other than sexual features and showing them in different careers such as dancers, engineers, racers and equestrians.
I particularly enjoyed Evans video 'Nice for what' due to the elements of feminism it portrayed which would link in nicely to my music video. I also liked some of the editing and effects used. For example in the racing scene the light splits to create a multicoloured strobe effect. This could be interesting to use in my performance scene to add dramatic effect to Nina Simone's performance. I also liked the use of slow-mo contrasted with the actors moving at regular speed which added to the tempo and mood of the video. I could use this to emphasise the beat picking up and dropping throughout the song. I will use shots, costumes and effects to ensure women are not sexualised and instead empowered in my music video.
