Initial Ideas

The brief outlines that the music video must be protest themed. In response to this, I have decided to focus on women issues, in particular equality between sexes in society.

I have decided to focus on feminist jazz music from the 60s, in particular empowering songs such as 'you don't own me' by Lesley Gore, and 'feeling good' by Nina Simone. The idea is to modernise these songs by showing that the issues these women were activists for during the 1960s are still issues in our modern society.

Ironically, the song 'feeling good' is an empowering and upbeat tune about change and freedom. It was written during the civil rights era by Nina Simone, an iconic yet controversial artist and activist at the time. I plan to use a cover of her song by Ms. Lauryn Hill for the music video.

The artist is Cynthia Rose, a young 18 year old women inspired by feminist artists such as Nina Simone, Lesley Gore and more recently artists such as Lily Allen, Beyonce, Rihanna and Jorja Smith. She focuses on covering older songs and modernising them, showing how the music is still current years later. She is inspired by political issues, feminism and anti-racism causes such as Black Lives Matter.
